To celebrate International Stuttering Awareness Day, the Irish Stammering Association are holding a weeklong series of events from Sunday, 13th of October to Tuesday 22nd October.
Our theme this year is ‘One Community, Many Voices – Seo Linn’.
We wanted to reflect the growth of ISA over recent years and show the supports that are provided by our community of people who stammer and allies.
ISA’s expansion with Employment and Education Support, and Youth Development in recent years offers significant resources to people who stutter of all ages - building on our range of support groups run by volunteers.
We know that stammering can have a negative impact at different points during a person’s life. We also know that by coming together we can reduce isolation and improve the lives of people who stutter and those around them.
An Autumn Walk and Talk starts off our week in Bray on Sunday October 13th.
We have curated talks and workshops on different days including the launch of our new Student Handouts on Tuesday 15th with a talk for educators, students, families, and SLTs. The children's group for 8-12 year olds is online on Mon 14th followed by 'Stammering and...Speech Therapy' on Wed 16th.
Adults with an interest in research can join an online World Café symposium on Friday 18th , while our international Minecraft club (for the younger people who stammer!) takes place on Thursday 17th and Sunday 20th. There is an opportunity for adults to play online games with the Bród Stadaireachta/Stammering pride group who are hosting a games night for adults on Tues 22nd.
Our main in person event takes place on Saturday 19th October in the Hilton Kilmainham Hotel in Dublin with tea and coffee on arrival. ISA Chair David Heney will give an update on ISA’s activities over the year. Public Speaking coach Fiona O’Meara will share experiences and strategies learned over her years working with people who stammer. Diversity and Inclusion consultant Andrea Dermody will talk about her experiences with stammering and how the Irish employment landscape continues to change. We will also have special events for young people who stammer including our ISAYiT! workshop with dynamic drama facilitator Charlie Hughes. Our Parents’ Support Group will have a special midmorning meet up with parents and caregivers welcome to join. Lunch is provided at 12.30 and we would love to see you there for a chat.
