We started this ‘zine when we were hanging out on video calls during the Covid-19 pandemic. We couldn’t see each other like we used to at ISAYiT! days and the summer camp so we decided to make this ‘zine instead with stories, poems, pictures and a lot of silliness. We also had some new friends who sent us things to include!
We don’t think we would have made the ‘zine if it wasn’t for being stuck inside so it just goes to show that…anything is possible.
What is a‘zine?
A 'zine is an informal mix of pictures, stories, articles and whatever we wanted to go into it. It's similar to a magazine, but the difference is that zines are created for and by unheard voices, rather than to make a profit.
What is in the ‘zine?
As you can see from the pictures below this ‘Zine contains some beautiful artwork that the contributors created, including a Unilion (which is the combination of a unicorn and a lion), a dog riding a shark, a portrait of Captain America, a game console, a paintbrush, a mountain biker and much more!
This ‘zine also contains one-line stories, which is an improv game where the group work together to build a story, each contributing one sentence at a time.
A few of the attendees wrote their own stories, and some of them wrote a story about Jo or Joe, which was a creative writing exercise in which they had to write about Jo or Joe in no more than 300 words, who could have lived anywhere and be anything, and in the story they had to solve a problem.
The ISA launched this ‘zine at International Stuttering Awareness Day on 22nd of October at The Hilton Hotel in Kilmainham, Dublin.
Some of the contributors of the ‘zine attended the launch and they got to see their work in person. They also had the opportunity to talk about the creative process and answer any questions about it.
This is a project to be very proud of, and it’s important to note that everyone who was involved played a significant role in putting it together! A big round of applause for everyone involved!
We also just want to say a big thank you to Conor Foran who worked very closely with the contributors to come up with the design of the ‘zine!
The ISA are looking forward to the next instalment of the ISAYiT! ‘zine and if you would like to contribute anything to the next issue then please email us at info@stammeringireland.ie for more details.
